Comparison

Apselog vs Datadog LLM Observability

Datadog LLM Observability is enterprise observability. It is built for SRE teams managing dozens of internal services, with a budget to match — $160+/mo before the LLM Obs add-on, before APM, before logs.

Apselog is the customer-facing AI status page. Built for indie AI founders who need a public trust surface, not another internal dashboard — at $29/mo, set up in 60 seconds, on a personal credit card.

Two different products serving two different buyers. This page is here so you can pick confidently in five minutes instead of three sales calls.

Apselog · $29 / mo

The status page built for AI apps

A customer-branded public status page that already understands OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, xAI, Replicate, Fireworks, Cohere, and Together — plus control-plane probes for Bedrock and Vertex. Adds golden-set drift detection, token-spend anomaly alerts, versioned prompts, lightweight tracing, PII scrubbing, PagerDuty and Opsgenie integrations, and custom theming. One product. Flat $29. Everything in the box.

Made for: indie founders, YC-stage AI startups, agencies shipping AI features.

Datadog · $160+ / mo

Enterprise observability with an LLM tab

A 700+ integration observability platform with an LLM Observability module and a separately-billed Status Pages SKU. Both excellent. Both usage-priced. The two products still do not talk to each other — "fusion" is the kind of thing that lives on enterprise roadmaps indefinitely.

Made for: enterprise SRE teams, regulated industries, organizations already paying for the rest of the Datadog stack.

Pricing

The 5x pricing math

We built one product. With Datadog you assemble it from two SKUs. The math below uses Datadog's published list prices as of early 2026. Your enterprise agreement may negotiate it down — but the indie founder paying with a credit card sees these numbers.

Line itemCost
Apselog Pro$29 / mo
Datadog LLM Observability (Pro)~$140 / mo
Datadog Status Pages (custom domain)~$20 / mo
Combined Datadog stack$160+ / mo

$160 / $29 ≈ 5.5x. For five and a half months of Apselog you get one month of the Datadog stack — and Datadog still has not fused LLM Obs with Status Pages. We did that on day one.

Feature matrix

What each tool actually ships today

Every row is current as of mid-2026. Where Apselog says yes, it is in production. Where we mark something "roadmap" we mean it — we do not pretend to ship things we don't. Where a row says "enterprise," that is a feature that genuinely serves enterprise SRE teams and we have not built it because it does not help indie AI buyers.

Where Apselog wins

The customer-facing AI trust surface — at indie pricing

We built one thing and we built it well: the public status page that finally understands AI. Here is where that focus pays off.

  • The customer-facing surface is the product, not an afterthought.

Datadog LLM Observability is a beautiful dashboard your customers will never see. Datadog Status Pages went GA in October 2025 — but the two products still do not talk. The fusion that would let your customers see "OpenAI degraded at 03:42 UTC, your app is impacted, here is the upstream link" is "coming soon" in enterprise tooling, which means indefinitely. Apselog ships that fusion as the entire premise.

  • Catches model drift, not just API errors.

An indie AI founder finds out via a confused support ticket on Monday morning that gpt-4o silently shipped a weight update over the weekend and their classification accuracy dropped 12%. Datadog would have caught the API call latency just fine — the endpoint returned 200, nothing to alert on. Apselog runs the golden set every night at 02:00 UTC, scores it with Claude Haiku as judge, and pages the founder before the first customer notices. This is the most differentiated thing we do.

  • Token-spend anomaly → public incident, automatically.

A prompt injection triggers a retry loop. A LangChain agent goes runaway. A customer sets max_tokens=10000 by accident. These spike costs 10x before they ever show up as user complaints. Apselog catches the spike at the cost layer, drafts a status update, and waits for human approval. Datadog charts the same spend — on an internal dashboard your customers cannot see.

  • Now with tracing, prompts, and PII scrubbing — at the same flat price.

As of this month we ship lightweight per-request tracing, versioned prompt management, and PII scrubbing on ingest. They are minimum-viable — not a full-flamegraph experience — but they are real and they are included on Pro. The table-stakes features Datadog led with are now on our side of the table, at one-fifth the price.

  • 60 seconds to live, on a personal credit card.

Sign up with Google, point a CNAME, paste your provider list, ship. Datadog is a weeks-long enterprise procurement with a sales engineer, a contract, and a trial-extension request. If your AI product is still finding product-market fit, you do not have weeks of meetings to spend before your first status page is live.

  • Three surfaces. Yours. Your customers'. Your runtime's.

Apselog ships a public status page (your users), a customer dashboard (you), and an ingest API (your runtime POSTing token usage). End users can subscribe by email for incident updates. You can drop an embeddable badge into your marketing site. Every other LLM-obs tool we have surveyed — Helicone, Langfuse, Braintrust, LangSmith, Datadog LLM Obs, OpenLLMetry, Opik — is one surface only. The engineer with a login. The user breaking nine-to-five has nowhere to go.

  • Flat, predictable, indie pricing.

$29/mo on Pro. Forever, regardless of how many spans you ingest. Datadog is usage-priced — the cost is whatever your ingestion grows into, and a single noisy week can blow the budget. We built one product for one buyer and priced it accordingly. We do not pretend to be everything to enterprise. That is exactly the point.

Where Datadog wins

For enterprise SRE teams with budget — not for indie AI products.

Datadog is genuinely better at a few things. Each of them matters only if you are the enterprise buyer they are built for.

  • Full flamegraph tracing with child spans for every retrieval, tool call, and embedding. If your debugging workflow lives in a waterfall view, Datadog wins.
  • SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA, FedRAMP, today. If your security team gates vendors at SOC 2 this quarter, this comparison is over. Ours is post-$50K-ARR.
  • 700+ integrations beyond the LLM stack. If your incident playbook correlates LLM regressions with Postgres locks and Kafka consumer lag, you want the platform that monitors all of it.
  • High-frequency synthetic checks (under 60 seconds) if your SLA requires it. Our probes run at 60-second cadence on Pro, two minutes on Free. Honest about the floor, not pretending to be synthetic-tight.

None of this is what an indie AI founder is buying. If you have a platform team, a procurement process, and a budget that does not flinch at $160+/mo before add-ons — Datadog is the right answer. If you do not, the bullets above are someone else's problem.

Decision guide

Which should you pick?

Our honest read: roughly 80% of AI builders reading this page should pick Apselog. The remaining 20% — enterprise SRE teams with budget and procurement — should pick Datadog, and we will gladly point them there.

Pick Apselog · most readers

You are shipping an AI product and need a public trust surface today.

  • You are an indie founder or small AI team without a dedicated SRE function.
  • You need a public status page at status.yourapp.com that your customers will actually look at, not another internal dashboard.
  • You want to be notified when a model silently drifts overnight — not just when the API throws 500s.
  • A 5x lower bill matters more than 700 integrations you will never wire up.
  • You ship on Vercel, route through one to three LLM providers, and want setup measured in minutes.
  • You want versioned prompts, lightweight tracing, and PII scrubbing — without paying for a per-host enterprise platform to get them.
  • You want your end users to subscribe to email updates, see embedded status badges in your marketing site, and never wonder if "it" is you or upstream.

Pick Datadog · enterprise only

You have a platform team and a budget for one pane of glass.

  • You already run Datadog APM / Logs / RUM and one pane of glass is worth $160+/mo.
  • You have a platform team and the budget for usage-priced ingestion to ramp into four figures.
  • SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, or FedRAMP are hard procurement gates this quarter.
  • Your incident playbook requires correlating LLM regressions with database locks and queue depth across 700+ integrations.

Some Apselog customers will eventually grow into Datadog buyers. Our job is to be the right tool while your AI app is finding product-market fit, and the right status page for your customers long after.
